A Brief History of Brisbane, Australia

Brisbane is the third highest populated state in Australia. It's known for its 280 out of the 365 days in a calendar year where the sun shines. Even though it's known as the third highest populated Australian state, Brisbane is actually growing in population faster than Sydney and Melbourne, which are the first and second highest populated Australian states respectively.

How Was Brisbane Named?

In 1823, Surveyor-General John Oxley originally named a river in Brisbane after the governor of New South Wales (NSW) at the time, Sir Thomas Brisbane.

Brisbane was named and founded before Queensland was discovered. Eventually, Brisbane became the capital of Queensland after Queensland was founded.

The Starting Days of Brisbane

In 1824, Brisbane was the site of a convict colony located at Redcliffe Point in its early days of founding. The only population counted in 1825 were the 45 men and 2 women in the convict colony.

Three years later, as the number of convicts being transferred to the penal colony decreased, there was also pressure for Brisbane to become a free settlement location. This was especially due to the increased need for Australian wool that could only be traded with representatives from Sydney.

Who Lived in Brisbane When It Was Founded?

Aborigine tribes inhabited the local area nearby Brisbane River long before the Europeans settled in Brisbane in 1824. The two tribes that mostly populated the area were Quandamooka, Turrbal, and Jagera Aborigines. While it's not exactly known how long these tribes inhabited the area prior to European settlement, history shows that Aborigines were dwelling the coast of Australia, including Brisbane River, as far back as over 40,000 years ago.

What Was Brisbane Known For When It Was Founded?

In the 1840s, the population started to grow exponentially in Brisbane. Eventually in the 1880s, Brisbane became known as the hub for commerce transactions in the local area.

The state even formed its own uniquely engineered buildings. A distinctive culture formed in Brisbane as well in the late 1800s which distinguished itself from other Australian states.

Brisbane was a segway for large groups of people going to attend faraway ceremonies or reach other destinations because of the many seasonal camps that were stationed nearby. Most seasonal camps contained anywhere from a minimum of 200 people to a maximum of 600 people. One of the seasonal camps from centuries ago is now known as the modern-day Victoria Park.
